FreeRock1 is an Internet-based radio station based in the suburbs of Cincinnati, OH. The primary format is Modern Rock and Alternative. The mix of music also includes Rhythmic (rap, urban, techno, dance, hip-hop, R&B, electronica, etc.); Loud (hardcore, metal, rapcore, industrial, goth, hard rock, etc.); and modern-leaning top 40/hit radio-type music. We also broadcast some specialty programs: FreeRock1 Nighttime (loud/hard rock); The Sanctuary (techno/electronica), and The Groove (rap/urban/hip-hop). The FreeRock1 stream is Webcast via servers at
Live365.com, in streaming MP3.
A Brief History
FreeRock1 began as an on-demand Web station streaming in RealAudioŇ. In June 2000, FreeRock1 switched to the "live" streaming MP3 format. In September 2000, FreeRock added 3 new specialty programs, and officially launched the new FreeRock1.com Website in January 2001.
The Vision
FreeRock1 is a Christian radio station. I believe that God has called us to serve through modern music, reaching an audience that is often overlooked in the market. I believe God has called us to present the message in a way that is not preachy, but at the same time is not hidden, and we strive to do this. Our goal is to minister to both Christians and non-Christians in a modern, relevant way. We try not to present ourselves as a "religious" station, but as another alternative or top 40 station would... with good music; then present the message (in the same way as many other stations of this type -- check out this interview with Michael Buckingham from Radio U in Columbus.
At the moment, we are solely Internet-based. However, as the Lord leads, we want to go through the doors He opens.
The Charts
FreeRock1 compiles a weekly Modern Rock chart, as well as biweekly Rhythmic, Loud, and Fringe (indie/underground/new bands) charts. FreeRock1 is a reporter to the Jamsline Rock chart, as well as Beyond Radio (Top 100, Christian, Airplay, and Untapped Resources), and the Chart at Christianmusic.about.com.
Independent Music
FreeRock1 is a big supporter of indepedent and unsigned music. A number of independent bands have made it past the Fringe and onto the Modern Rock charts here at FreeRock1. Often, a grassroots approach is most effective.
If you are an independent artist or band looking for airplay, send us music. While submission does not automatically guarantee airplay, as long as it fits within the format, we are willing to give it a listen. E-mail us for more information.
